The former category is the more common of the two. Artifacts can either be made from Shadowlands-based materials such as soulsteel or Stygian steel, or from relics, which case they are known as Relic Artifacts. He is interrupted during a battle with Noctis and the others when Shinryu emerges and swallows the crystal whole.An Artifact is an item of the Shadowlands that temporarily bestows power upon the user or owner. Ardyn manipulates many of Spiritus' warriors in order to use this power to destroy all worlds in defiance of the gods. The arrival of Ardyn Izunia accelerates this, as his strong affinity with darkness resonates with the Core. The strain on the core of darkness eventually reacts with the memories of Spiritus' warriors that he had sequestered in it, as he had removed their memory of the powerful forms they used in their final battles. For some, however, it is their own reluctance to relive the pain of those memories that delays them. As a result, reuniting with the Manikins long enough to regain their Brilliance proves to be a struggle for the party. Some Manikins are manipulated emotionally with the memories they carry, while others are possessed and used as an energy source for destructive goals.
Although the memories give the Dark Manikins sentience and purpose, their lack of true emotions makes them vulnerable to manipulation by the party's foes. In each new place, party members from different worlds encounter the Dark Manikins of themselves. As the party traverses the landscape of this new world, their foes begin to use the power of will to recreate places from their homes, starting with Kuja's attempt to summon the Iifa Tree. However, as the Brilliance is a significant source of energy, numerous villains who remain opposed to Mog's party also seek it for their own ends. The Brilliance contains not only light, but painful memories which Materia removed from her summoned champions in the belief that they could not achieve respite unless she did so. In order to do so, they must recover the Brilliance sequestered in the Dark Manikins. Materia warns that it can only uphold both worlds for a certain amount of time and it is necessary for the summoned warriors to remake the Crystal of Light. After the destruction of the Crystal of Light, the Crystal of Darkness takes on the burden of maintaining both halves of the World of Respite.
